The Department of Education proudly presents you the Study Plan 2009/10! A complete guide through the Syllabus of our Faculty, which includes all the essential information for the 1st year of Medicine! The following content is an honest advice that we offer you! This doesn’t mean that you cannot use different resources or study materials than the ones that we present you here! We only give you our recommendations based also on the opinion of the corresponding departments. Always keep your notes!!

Anatomy, Biophysics, Biology, Medical Chemistry, Basic Medical Terminology, First Aid, Czech language, Medical Ethics, Histology & Embryology and Biochemistry I.
Anatomy:
By many 'Fathers of Medicine' Anatomy was baptized as the 'Queen of Medicine'. They are not wrong! Anatomy provides you the fundamentals of the structure of the human body in all sections and branches of its magically enormous size. Structure of the musculoskeletal system, Structure of the internal organs, structure of the nervous system and also topographical structuring of the human body.
Our hint: Become good friends with Anatomy! It is really important to keep in close contact with the course. Both in practical sessions but mostly in lectures and seminars you need to generate a pattern of understanding of its bases. Once you achieve that, the trip begins! And it’s a long way... but full of magic!
Recommended material: Studying Anatomy can be divided into three forms of textbooks. Descriptive and scheme containing textbooks, color Atlas’s that contain all systems in detail and Dissection course manuals.
Majority of our students found the following really useful:
Color Atlas and textbook of Human Anatomy Volumes 1, 2 and 3. Volume 1 contains the Locomotor System, Volume 2 the Internal Organs and Volume 3 the Nervous System. They are all editions of Thieme Publishing and can be all found on our Campus library.

Gross Anatomy and structure of the Human Nervous System part 1 Surface Anatomy and structural arrangement of the Nervous System. This is probably your best choice in Neuroanatomy. The textbook is written and edited by our Professor and Head of the Department of Anatomy, Professor Petr Dubovy and it contains schematic representations and rich text. The book can be found at our Campus library, or you can buy it from the Faculty bookshop which is located over the library in the same building of the Campus.!

Sobotta Atlas of Human Anatomy Volume 1 & 2 A standard all time classic value in Atlas Series of Anatomy. The Book is not available in our library but we recommend it as a great value for buying it!

Atlas of Human Anatomy, Frank Netter Some people call him 'the Legend' Dr. Frank Netter was an Artist a Physician, and Medical illustrator whose publications are one of the most invaluable scientific heritage globally!
The book is not available at our library but you can buy it and if you want to build your medical library…it's a must!

Instructions for anatomical dissection course, Petr Dubovy
Dissection is...‘’the real thing’’. Your dissection training starts by the end of the 2nd semester and finishes at the end of the 3rd. The manual of our Professor is a 'must read before I go' book, if you really want to learn during the dissection course! You can borrow it from our library or buy it from our bookshop!

Biophysics:
Biophysics is the science that studies the application of physics in Medicine. As technology is growing, physics in combination with it can achieve great advantages in the modern practice of Medicine. During the course you will be taught extremely interesting technological advances of the Physical Science and their application in medicine as well as medical informatics, all at our state of the art laboratories at our Campus!
Our hint: Biophysics is a 1 semester course. You should take the opportunity that’s given to you to learn and enjoy this important and very interesting subject!

Biophysical principles of medical technology, Prof. Voitěch Mornstein et.al This textbook of our Professor and Head of the Department of Biophysics covers the vast majority of the topics of the course! Another valuable resource are the lectures! Pay attention and keep notes!

Biology:
Biology is the study of living organisms and how they interact with their environment. Biology deals with every aspect of life in a living organism. Biology examines the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living things. During the course you will be introduced into the enormous world of life through the exceptional microscopic angle of Biology! Our hint: Biology is an enormous science. It is essential for all of us to have the fundamental bases of Biology in order to better understand the philosophy of medicine! Plus, in the practical sessions, you will discover things that will definitely make you feel really excited! The lectures are a key point for keeping notes and also keeping a good contact with the syllabus!

Biology, Neil A. Campbell et.al This book is one of the 'golden books' of Biology. It is available at our Campus library. Furthermore you will receive a practical exercise manual from the department of Biology which you will use for the practical sessions which is equally really helpful!

Medical Chemistry:
In Medical Chemistry you will be introduced to the essential components of Chemical Science and its application in Medicine. Medical Chemistry is without a doubt one of the most important fundamentals in all positive sciences but also in Medicine. Our department of Biochemistry where Medical Chemistry is also taught, together with the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science, are of 2 of the most renowned research institutes in the Czech Republic as well as internationally. The laboratories are located in the University Campus, Building A16 and are equipped with the latest generation technological equipment, both for research but also for teaching purposes.
Our hint: Medical Chemistry is one of the 4 Series of Chemical Sciences that you will be taught in our Faculty. The rest are: Biochemistry I (2nd Semester) Biochemistry II (4th Semester) and Clinical Biochemistry (9th Semester). Consequently you can understand that obtaining a really good background in the Subject of Medical Chemistry is a really important task and a valuable duty!

This Book is your official study companion for the Subject of Medical Chemistry. Written and edited by our Associate Professor Doc. Jiři Dostál, under the stamp of the Department of Biochemistry,it gives you an excellent guidance throughout the course! The book can be found at our Campus library or can be bought through our bookshop.
Note: It is of great importance to prepare yourselves for the Seminars the programme of which is issued by the department every year. It is also essential to read and prepare your chapter before going to the lessons. Going to the seminars without studying is of no sense. The seminars are the sessions where the protagonists are YOU and not your Tutor. Prepare well before you go and be sure you’ll be rewarded, because there is nothing more rewarding than feeling that you’ve completed a task with success!
Medical Chemistry Practicals, Josef Tomandl The second Volume of a publication of the Department of Biochemistry, comes this time by Dr. Tomandl and contains analytically the practical exercises of the course. The book will be given to you from the department or in case of lack the individual chapters of the corresponding practical sessions will be given to you in advance.
Medical Chemistry I, General and inorganic chemistry, E. Táborská, J. Sláma The 1st volume of this series issued by the Department of Biochemistry carries the name of the Head of the Department and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, our Professor, Dr. Eva Táborská and of our Associate Professor Dr. Jaromír Sláma. It is a book that all students that want to succeed in Chemistry must have, as it contains the fundamental bases of it. You can find the book at our library and our bookshop.

Medical Chemistry II, Bioorganic chemistry, Jiří Dostál The 2nd volume comes again from Associate Professor Dostál. It is of course logic to have the 2nd volume in your library. You can find it at our Bookshop and our library.

Basic Medical Terminology:
‘’Nulla res tam necessaria est quam medicina.’’
‘’Πάντων μέτρων Άνθρωπος’’
No idea of what you just read? That’s why you didn’t yet start to get familiar with the course of Basic medical terminology. At our Department of languages you will board on the time machine and take a trip to the Ancient Roman and Greek civilization...of medicine! Greeks and Romans established an international terminology hundreds of years ago and their creature is still alive! There’s no Doctor of Medicine in the world that does not speak Greek and Latin while using medical terminology!! Want to be the first? We don’t think so..!
Our hint: Basic medical terminology is a subject that can feed you with a lot of interest about the terminology of medicine but mostly it can provide you with the bases of how to use the terminology during your medical practice! Keep a close eye on it and value the great notes that your Tutors give you during the teaching sessions!

This handbook is an excellent resource for your course in Basic Medical terminology for both semesters of the 1st year. You can find it both at our library and our faculty bookshop!
First Aid:
Help!!! Are there any Doctors here? What’s the first thing you have to do when you hear this call? Take your first aid kit and run to the scene! First aid is the key in emergency medicine, because if provided correct, you can save a life! The first clinical subject for a medical student is really one of the most exciting courses of the 1st year! Experienced Anesthesiologists and Emergency Physicians will introduce you to the fundamentals of emergency Medicine, through a series of interactive practical sessions involving computer simulated models of training, first aid methods training and a lot more that will make you every week await for the next!
Our hint: First aid is the very first course that brings you in contact with clinical Medicine! It is a very interesting and equally exciting subject that you need to learn and enjoy as much as you can! Don’t forget your white coats!!

This is a very practical textbook that gives you the basic knowledge of first aid with schematic representations and well defined illustrations! You can find it at our library and you can order it from our faculty bookshop!

Czech Language I & II:
Chcete opravdu mluvit česky?
Your answer to this question should be: ANO! Do you really want to speak Czech? YES!
Studying in the Czech Republic means also living in it! Who likes to live in a country where it’s impossible to communicate properly? No one! Czech language is a difficult language, but this doesn’t make it any less important to learn it. It is probably the most important course in the faculty syllabus by means of fundamentals. Why? because it is the base for your continuation to the clinical years of the Syllabus of our Medical School! No patient is obliged to speak English during clinical training! What does this mean? That if you want to obtain 100% quality training as its happening at our Faculty Hospitals, you NEED to have the basic communication skills in Czech language. It is not a suggestion; it’s all of our obligation.
Our hint: Be very focused! Pay a lot of attention during the class. If you need to ask, ask! Again and again! That’s why your Tutors are here, to teach you! Don’t leave the class with questions in your head! You have to realize that it is of extreme importance to speak Czech once you reach the clinical years! Plus, the course of Czech language, is the only course in the faculty that we are being taught for eight (8!!!) Semesters! Don’t forget: The more languages you speak the more persons you are!
Recommended material:Czech for beginners, Dpt. of Languages, Faculty of Medicine This is the book that will guide you in your first steps of learning the language. Being written and edited collectively from our Department of languages it contains all the important foundation of the Czech language. The book can be found both at our library and our bookshop. Previously the book was used until the 8th semester, but currently it is subjected to change according to the preference of your Tutor. Ask them for more information!

Medical Ethics:
Ethos is a merit in Medicine. That’s exactly what the course of medical ethics is willing to teach you. During the practice of Medicine you will face many difficult situations where you should judge like a professional but also by holding high your principles of applying the art of Medicine. That’s why it is important to express your opinions, discuss but also argue during this really interesting course.
Our hint: The subject is taught in the first year and in the fourth year of our faculty. It is a really open subject where you can freely express your opinion but also learn a lot of practical tips on how to practice medicine with respect. Before you graduate, your theses about ethics will be highly evaluated, so try to absorb as much as you can from this course.
Recommended material: The subject has an extensive bibliography. It is hard to recommend one specific resource for this course. It is wiser to refer to your Tutors for their recommendations!
Histology & Embryology:
A cell is enough! That’s how everything starts in life! Histology & Embryology are 2 closely connected sciences that describe the detailed cascade of genesis. From conception until birth and through the life of a human Histology depicts the human body in the smaller surfaces than the ones you ever imagined! All the tissues of the body have an origin, a structure a function and a lot more properties that define them. Embryology specifically studies the cascade of development of a human from the very first moment of fertilisation. They are both two Sciences that without them Medicine probably wouldn’t exist today.
Our hint: This is a subject that your attention is required at the maximum levels. During the practical sessions but also during the lectures you should try to come in good contact with the content of this enormous subject as its an essential foundation for your future in Medicine.
Recommended material: Histology is a subject that like Anatomy, requires both textbook and Atlas. Our library is rich in textbooks and Atlas’s of Histology, so from our side we can only recommend you textbooks since an Atlas is always based on different preference of each student in the subject of Histology.

Biochemistry I:
Biochemistry studies the chemical processes within living organisms. In medicine, Biochemistry is a key component for the understanding of key functions of the human organisms both in physiological and pathological conditions. During the 2nd semester you will be introduced to the fundamentals of essential Biochemistry which is really important to understand in order to proceed with the rest of the Biochemistry courses that our Faculty has.
Our hint:Biochemistry is a subject that requires strong bases in general Chemistry that you have been taught in the course of Medical Chemistry but also from your high school. You should pay special attention at the seminars and at the lectures in order to achieve a better understanding of the principles of Biochemistry that are essential for your future in Medicine.
